Sustainability Summit China 2022

Sustainable Design Summit China 2023

Aritco China’s Experience Manager Jessica Tian discusses how Sustainable Design Summit China 2023 unites pioneers from architecture, design, and innovation to forge a greener future.

In the world of design and sustainability, the Sustainable Design Summit China (SDSC) stands as a beacon of innovation and collaboration. This prestigious event, set to take place in Beijing the 21-23 of September, showcases the fusion of cutting-edge design with sustainability principles. From panel discussions to inspiring forums, the summit serves as a platform for architects, designers, innovators, and decision-makers to shape a more sustainable future.

As a sponsor, Aritco will be exhibiting at the summit at stand 2-24 as well as participating in the forum discussion: Towards a Greener Future.

We sat down with Jessica Tian, Experience Designer at Aritco China, to learn more about this year’s summit and how it aligns with Aritco’s commitment to sustainability.

Jessica Tian, Experience Designer at Aritco China

Hi Jessica! Could you provide some context about the summit's background and significance in China and the broader Asian market?

The summit has its roots in the China Design Beijing event. However, over time, many international and local organizations and governments have emphasized the importance of carbon neutrality in construction by 2040. Hence, the former exhibition transformed into the Sustainable Design Summit China, concentrating on sustainability, design, and environmental protection. Beijing, being China’s capital and a hub of sustainable policies and strategies, was a natural choice for hosting the summit.

I can’t say how significant the event is as of yet since it launched in 2022 and this year is only the second year.  But they officially announced achieving significant advances in urban planning, green tech, materiality, data collection and impact measurement to achieve positive environmental and social benefits as a result of the previous summit.”

How is Aritco participating in this year’s summit?

“While we attended with a booth last year, this time, we’re joining the summit’s more comprehensive approach, which combines exhibitions with panel discussions and forums.

There are six themes at the center of this year’s summit: Designing a Sustainable Future, Circular Design Matters, On the Path to Net Zero, Towards a Greener Future, Holistic Hospitality, and The Empathic Workplace. Aritco will be participating in the panel discussion Towards a Greener Future, which covers topics such as the international exchange and integration of advanced concepts of sustainable buildings and transitioning into sustainable businesses.”

Can you elaborate on Aritco's sustainability commitment and how it aligns with the summit's goals?

“Sustainability has been a core element of Aritco’s agenda since its inception 27 years ago. Our achievements include having a climate-neutral factory and elevators that are 95% recyclable. We’re actively working towards a 100% recyclability target for our elevator systems. Facing challenges such as material shortages and the climate crisis, we’re committed to sustainable design, innovation, material choices, and creating a sustainable workplace. These efforts resonate with the summit’s focus on designing a sustainable future and protecting our environment.”

What are your thoughts on the future of the design industry and sustainability, particularly in China and the broader APEC market?

“China is increasingly prioritizing sustainability and design. More companies are recognizing the importance of sustainable development, and discussions around sustainability are growing. The summit plays a pivotal role in driving these conversations across various industries. I’ve observed that this year’s participants are more diverse, including companies beyond architecture and design. This expansion of the sustainability discourse to different industries is a significant trend.”
