Accelerating Retrofitting: Sustainable Solutions for the Homes of Tomorrow

The latest trend report by Aritco and Springwise dives into the growing importance of retrofitting as a global strategy for sustainable living.

As the world comes together to try to tackle climate change, the built environment plays a critical role in reducing global emissions. Retrofitting is proving to be a crucial part of transforming homes into more sustainable, livable spaces.

“Retrofitting and future-proofing is clearly a focus for the future, and making our houses accessible, durable, and fitted to future needs is essential,” says Ida Lindvall, Head of Sales & Marketing at Aritco.

A 2025 trend report, co-created by Aritco and Springwise, takes a look at how innovation in retrofitting is accelerating, offering practical solutions for making homes more energy-efficient while ensuring they remain accessible and comfortable for their inhabitants, including an aging population. To help homeowners, businesses and architects alike gain an understanding of the every-changing landscape of the build environment, we’re sharing a few key takeaways from this year’s report.

Retrofitting: A Global Imperative

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), buildings account for one-third of global energy system emissions. While new construction can integrate sustainable solutions from the outset, much of the existing high-emissions building stock will remain for decades. Around 80% of the buildings we live in today will still be in use by 2050, so meeting climate targets will require significant upgrades to these buildings. Unfortunately, the retrofitting process has not progressed fast enough. The interim report from the Global Retrofit Index, published by sustainability advisors 3Keel, found that the current pace of retrofitting is insufficient to meet national net-zero goals, even in the G20 countries with the best performance.

Innovative solutions are needed to accelerate this transition. Thankfully, companies and governments are coming together to remove the barriers to large-scale retrofitting. For example, tools like France Rénov help homeowners navigate energy-efficient upgrades, while AI-driven platforms like Kestrix use drones to assess heat leaks from buildings, providing data for targeted improvements. These innovations offer tangible steps toward achieving energy efficiency without the need for large-scale demolitions or disruptions.

In Britain, where some of Europe’s oldest and leakiest homes are found, the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) reports that nearly 29 million homes will need to be retrofitted by 2050. On a global scale, the International Energy Agency (IEA) emphasizes that 20% of existing buildings must be renovated to be zero-carbon-ready by the end of this decade – a goal that is “ambitious but necessary.”

A Focus on Accessibility

A key part of retrofitting is ensuring homes are equipped to meet the needs of an aging population. As life expectancy increases and people generally live healthier lives, the number of individuals requiring elderly care is set to rise. This growing demand for care presents a significant challenge, particularly with the cost of care homes steadily climbing. In response, many countries are introducing initiatives to help older citizens remain in their homes for longer. However, it’s worth noting that a large portion of these homes – about two-thirds – suffer from poor energy efficiency. Retrofitting these homes to improve both accessibility and energy performance is key to addressing these challenges and preparing for the future.

Aritco HomeLifts are a cost-effective and energy-efficient retrofit solution for individuals looking to future-proof their homes. With unprecedented levels of customization in regards to size and style, it makes it easy to adapt the lift to the specific needs and tastes of the homeowner.

Access to Sustainable Technologies

Heat pumps, solar panels, and better insulation are just a few of the technologies transforming homes into low-carbon spaces. However, the significant upfront costs of these technologies can be a major hurdle for many homeowners.

Platforms like Prêts help make energy-efficient upgrades more accessible by providing homeowners with clear information about the savings they can expect. Similarly, companies like Aira and GRYD Energy offer accessible heat pump and solar power solutions through subscription models with zero upfront costs. These financing models make it easier for homeowners to invest in sustainable technologies and reduce their carbon footprints regardless of their financial situation.

The Path Forward

From digital tools that help homeowners plan renovations to financing models that reduce upfront costs, these innovations are changing the way we approach retrofitting. With the right combination of energy-efficient technologies, accessible designs, and innovative financing models, retrofitting can ensure that homes are not only more sustainable but also adaptable to the needs of future generations.
